Answers & Questions

From the North
the wind blows cold
swirling about buildings
enshrouding our bodies
in cold isolation

When the sun peeks out
taunting and teasing
it makes this place colder
This warmth and comfort
to see but not feel

It droops below horizon
and the streets empty
giving the wind free reign
to brutally punish
those who remain

I face all this alone
these cold empty streets
Searching this night
for the answers I need
or the questions to ask

I watch as the masses
file through the doors
of brightly lit taverns
Beacons of warmth
in icy barren streets

Through these doors I follow
To see what's the fuss
And find bodies packed tightly
as a rush hour bus
and yet at great distance

Pressed in the crowd
They all stand alone
Longing for something
or someone to hold
but find nothing

In void of solace
they turn to the bottle
to bring them merriment
despite all that's bleak
All save one

Here in this tavern
I find one called God
Huddled in the corner
trying to shake the cold
she shivers and quakes

Cold of isolation
Cold of indifference
Alone in this crowd
Shuddering in this warmth
Utterly ignored

No one to notice save I
As I step to the bar
and order my drink
I doff my coat
and I wait

I take up my order
and walk away
Wind through the crowd
on to that corner
where she shakes alone

I walk up behind
and throw coat around
into those frigid hands
this styrofoam cup
and its hot chocolate

We step out the door
and into the snow
Into dark and into cold
Under pale moonlight
she shines

We walk through the streets
and onto the river
Out here on the ice
envelloped in cold wind
Then echoing crack

We plunge through the ice
and into the river
Her hand in mine
as we sink ever deeper
Then calm

In cold icy waters
Warmth and comfort
Need and desire
We find our answers
and even their questions
